Professor Edwards did his PhD and specialist movement disorder training at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery and the UCL Institute of Neurology with Professor Kailash Bhatia and Professor John Rothwell.

His research focused on the mechanisms behind dystonia, particularly DYT1 dystonia. He went on to do further research in the diagnosis, mechanism and treatment of dystonia.

Since moving to St George's he has continued this work and is academic lead for the movement disorder team at the Atkinson Morley Regional Neurosciences Centre which offers specialist assessment and treatment for people with dystonia, including deep brain stimulation surgery.
