About us News Postcode lottery for DBS in Scotland The Dystonia Society responds to a BBC Scotland report into the ‘postcode lottery’ for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) treatment in Scotland. BBC Scotland has published a story highlighting a ‘postcode lottery’ for people in Scotland who need Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)*. The story can be found here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-34045063 Commenting on the story, Dorothy Chisholm, the Dystonia Society’s Scottish Regional Officer, said: "Today's report highlights just how variable access to this vital treatment can be. DBS is a complex and specialised treatment that is not appropriate for everyone with dystonia, but for some people it can be life-changing. "Creating a dedicated specialist centre in Glasgow would be a hugely important step to reduce the current 'postcode lottery' and to ensure that there is continuing expertise available for anyone in Scotland who might need it. "But there is also more work to do to ensure that the views and experiences of people with dystonia, and other neurological conditions, in Scotland are listened to so that they get the multi-disciplinary care and support that they need.” - ENDS - Notes to Editor: For more information about Deep Brain Stimulation click here.
