Do you want to make a difference to the way NHS Services that affect you are provided?
20 February 2008
If you do you can become a member of a NHS Foundation Trust (FT) or you can be a representative on a local or regional Neurological Alliance. It does not mean a huge time commitment if you don’t want it to however equally you can become very involved.
FTs are a new type of NHS Trust in England part of the Governments plan for creating efficient high quality patient-led NHS care. Decision making has been devolved from central Government to local organisations and communities so they are more responsive to the needs and wishes of their local people.
Membership of a FT is open to local residents and staff. You can also be a member even if you live outside the area if you have been a patient or carer at one of the Trust’s hospitals. There is no limit to the number of people who can register as members providing they meet the eligibility criteria. FTs must engage with local communities and encourage local people to become members. Ensuring membership is representative of the communities they serve and there is a proper balance between different groups.
What being a member means
Members of a NHS Foundation Trust have a number of important roles to perform as they are able to:
- Elect representatives to the Board of Governors
- Stand for election to the Board of Governors
- Put themselves forward for appointment as Chair of the Trust or non-Executive Directors on the Board of Directors.
Membership is voluntary and free of charge and obligation. Members are able to give their views on relevant issues for Governors to act.
How can I become a member?
If you have had a letter inviting you to become a member think about it very seriously as this really is an opportunity to make a difference.
You can also contact your local hospital or treatment centre to find out what stage they are at with becoming a FT.
Neurological Alliance
The Neurological Alliance is made up of a wide range of neurological charities which have come together to make life better for people in the UK with a neurological condition. There is a national group and the Dystonia Society is represented there by both Philip Eckstein and Val Wells. There are regional groups which some of you are members of which is great and it would be good for us here at the UK office to get feedback of the progress being made. If you want to join a group you can contact Val Wells at UK office on 0845 458 6299 or val@dystonia.org.uk
