Dystonia and work

The majority of people fine their dystonia can be well managed are they are able to continue to work, although adjustments to the working environment and/or a reduction in hours worked may be needed. Your neurologist can advise you about the effect (if any) of medication you may be taking on your ability to work.

Should I tell my employer? That choice is yours, however the following link to a Government website on employment rights and disability may be helpful, especially if you think you are being treated unfairly.

What can I do if I want help staying at work? The Dystonia Society factsheet working with dystonia may be helpful as is a factsheet on the Employment and Support Allowance (ESA).

I am an employer of a person with dystonia. Employers and HR services may not be aware of the help available to support their employee(s) with dystonia. Please call the Helpline on 0845 458 6322 to discuss further.
